چکیده

This article summarizes the structural parameters of the Galactic bulge and disk, and discusses the interpretation of the bulge microlensing observations and the determination of the Milky Way’s luminous mass from the terminal velocity curve and the Oort limit. The bulge is a rotating bar with corotation radius around 4 kpc. The NIR disk has a short scale-length. The measured surface density of the local disk is in good agreement with the prediction of a maximum NIR disk model for the Milky Way. The preliminary new value for the microlensing optical depth of clump giant sources is within 1.7σ of the prediction by the maximum NIR disk model, while the optical depth for all sources is still significantly higher. These results imply that cold dark matter cannot dominate inside the solar radius.

Mass Distribution and Bulge Formation in the Milky Way Galaxy

In its first part, this paper summarizes recent work on the mass and shape of the Galactic dark halo. The second part presents a review of the large-scale structure of the Milky Way, and of the evidence that the inner Galaxy is dominated by baryonic matter. This is briefly compared with the predictions of ΛCDM and MOND. Finally, a summary is given of bulge formation from clumpy, gas-rich disks,...

Large-Scale Model of the Milky Way: Stellar Kinematics and Microlensing Event Timescale Distribution in the Galactic Bulge

We build a stellar-dynamical model of the Milky Way barred bulge and disk, using a newly implemented adaptive particle method. The underlying mass model has been previously shown to match the Galactic near-infrared surface brightness as well as gas-kinematic observations. Here we show that the new stellar-dynamical model also matches the observed stellar kinematics in several bulge fields, and ...

Nearly Self-Consistent Disk-Bulge-Halo Models for Galaxies

We describe methods for setting up self-consistent disk-bulge-halo galaxy models. The bulge and halo distribution functions (df) are functions of E and Lz only. The halo’s flattening and rotation can be specified. The disk df is a function of E and Lz and a third “integral”, Ez, the vertical energy, which is approximately conserved in a warm disk with vertical extent. The models also have finit...

The Metallicity Distribution of the Milky Way Bulge

The Galactic bulge of the Milky Way is made up of stars with a broad range of metallicity, –3.0 < [Fe/H] <1 dex. The mean of the metallicity distribution function decreases as a function of height z from the plane and, more weakly, with galactic radius RGC. The most metal-rich stars in the inner Galaxy are concentrated to the plane and the more metal-poor stars are found predominantly further f...

Equilibrium Disk-Bulge-Halo Models for the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxies

We describe a new set of self-consistent, equilibrium disk galaxy models that incorporate an exponential disk, a Hernquist model bulge, an NFW halo and a central supermassive black hole. The models are derived from explicit distribution functions for each component and the large number of parameters permit detailed modeling of actual galaxies. We present techniques that use structural and kinem...
